Well, this morning it seems we’re going to be analyzing some common superstitions. Let’s figure this out, from a scientific viewpoint, and see if I’m superstitious or not.

Superstition 1: Breaking a mirror is 7 years bad luck
I have no issues with breaking mirrors. In fact, this activity has brought me a lot of joy in the past. It definitely doesn’t bring any sort of bad luck to break a mirror, but the mirror itself can be full of bad juju — and if that’s the case, just break the hell out of that thing.
Superstition 2: Thirteen is an unlucky number
I disagree entirely. Thirteen is a wonderful number! It’s commonly stated that a “full” coven has thirteen members, so maybe that’s why many people don’t like the number. I actually thought of making this list 13 bullet points long, but that seemed to be an excessive amount of writing.
Superstition 3: Opening an umbrella inside is bad luck
I’ve opened umbrellas inside plenty of times without feeling any sort of waves of bad luck. I mean, how else are you supposed to test them out at the umbrella store?
Superstition 4: Be wary if a black cat crosses your path
If a black cat crosses my path, I’m going to talk to it and give it some love. If it follows me back home, I’m going to feed it. Actually, Selene and I sort of adopted a neighborhood cat this way — we named her “Midnight” because we first started seeing her late at night. Ooo, maybe that’s scary… not just a black cat, but a black cat at midnight!!!
Superstition 5: The full moon is a dangerous night
I do believe that people act quite a bit crazier on full moon nights, but I don’t think that has anything to do with superstition. Honestly though, people don’t really need more excuses to act crazy.
Superstition 6: Crossing your fingers will bring good luck
I could never get behind this one. As a kid, I remember seeing people cross their fingers and it always puzzled me. I’ve tried it out many times (for science) and never felt like it skewed any sort of results in my favor.
Superstition 7: Knocking on wood wards off bad luck
I do very often knock on things that are not wood. I will sometimes even accompany this by saying the words “knock on wood.” Please note that I usually do this sarcastically and with full knowledge of that fact that what I’m knocking on is not actually wood.
And there you have it! I think I’ve proven that I’m not superstitious. In fact, I’d be happy to break a mirror with an open umbrella in the presence of thirteen black cats without crossing my fingers or knocking on wood — and I’d do it all on the night of the full moon.
And just so we’re clear, the crystals and talismans that I wear or carry around with me every day aren’t superstitions — they’re magick.
Good morning and happy Monday, friends!
I need your help! I’m trying to decide on what type of instrument to make a video about next time. I’ve got a big list and I’m finding it hard to choose, so I’m leaving it up to you. I made a poll in the community section of my YouTube channel — you should be able to access it through this link, but for some reason YouTube is making it excessively hard for me to share it directly on Facebook. If you’re having trouble, just go my channel’s homepage, click the community tab, and you’ll see the poll listed at the top. As I’m typing this, “drums” are tied with “simple instruments” (ie – single note instruments like tuning forks or singing bowls). Whatever has the most votes at the end of this week will win… and I’ll start filming!
Last week, I posted two articles. The first was on pendulum divination, but the second was my long-promised part 3 of the fluid condenser series. You know what’s left after that? Just part 4! And then it’ll be finished! Finally… finally finished.
I also spoke with Si from Mandragora Magika — he answered a bunch of questions for me and you can expect to see all those answers in a community spotlight article on Tuesday morning.
I’ve been writing a lot this past week or so. I’m trying to get ahead of my posting schedule so that I can more easily switch my focus back and forth between writing and other projects like videos or music. Honestly, I’m just about burnt out on word output right now, so briefly shifting gears to something a little different will be a welcomed respite.
I spent quite a bit of time gathering up all of the tracks I recorded over the past few months. I ran them through some mastering plugins, created some album art and full liner notes… and then bundled it all together as an exclusive Patreon download. If you’re the type of person that likes to support musicians, it’ll cost you $3 to get access… and in the process you’ll make a huge difference to me.
It’s mine and Selene’s wedding anniversary this week, so I made her a sistrum. It was the first project where I’ve ever accidentally cut, stabbed, and burned myself all for the same goal. Maybe you’ll see more of that soon.
I can’t believe we’re in March already. Actually, I almost wrote the wrong date on this post — I had initially written 2/4. More things are coming soon. Stay tuned!
