Results are incredibly motivating for me. They can come in various forms and are not always equivalent to success. Failure is also a result.
Win or lose, you’ve at least [hopefully] got a better set of information for what works in the future.
But sometimes these results aren’t concrete. They’re subjective. And they can be tiny. For instance, if I work out one day a week, I probably won’t see any physical results, but I might feel accomplished. That’s a success! And if I eat a nutritious meal instead of a garbage one, I probably won’t have any immediate benefits, but I will feel like I did something healthy. I’ve certainly gotten by for long periods of time simply on the basis of feeling like I did something positive for my body,
What types of other things qualify as results?
- Learning something
- Finishing a book or even a movie
- Practicing a skill or technique
That last item is pretty key because it’s a reminder that progress itself can be satisfying and motivating. You don’t have to reach the end to feel good.
When it comes down to it though, I do love measurable data and trends. I’m always fascinated to look at my website traffic and YouTube stats because I’m so curious to analyze results. What worked? What didn’t work? Charts trending in a positive direction is a really good feeling, even if the data is low.
But, oh well, I’m a nerd.
