[Reluctantly] crouched at the starting line
Engines pumping and thumping in time
The green light flashes, the flags go up
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup…

No, no, wait. Those are the lyrics to a Cake song.

You see, I was going to answer this question with the word “reluctantly,” but any time my brain can fill in the gaps with lyrics, it triggers a song in my head. It happens just about every day and in the middle of many serious conversations. It’s annoying. I just thought I’d give you a brief glimpse into the inner workings of my mind.

Let me give you a few examples:

  • “Never” triggers “gonna give you up”
  • “Some” triggers “…body once told me”
  • “Let’s” triggers “get down to business”
  • “At first” triggers “I was afraid”

I hope it least one of those got a song stuck in your head because at this point, all four of those are going to be swimming around in mine for a while.

Back to the topic at hand: yes, I’m a reluctant leader. I’m more than happy to let other people stand up and do things, but if no one emerges to do so, I’ll take charge.

  2. Interesting and relatable. The first part, I mean… The second part too, of course, but addressing the first point of the post… This has happened to me a lot. I actually quit listening to the radio and popular music because I started to see the programming that was going on in my own head. It’s frightening…I started having a lot more control of my own thoughts and decisions when I quit listening to the radio or buying into advertisements.
