Am I superstitious? You tell me.

A few weeks ago, it seemed as if water was leaking through the light fixture in our kitchen ceiling. And by “seemed,” I mean… well, it did. It dripped on my wife.

We just couldn’t really come up for any explanation as to why it happened. There’s a bathroom above the kitchen, sure. That’s certainly a likely cause. But no one was in there at the time. Plus, I ran all the faucets and couldn’t replicate the issue.

Have you ever heard the phrase: “Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action”?

It’s from James Bond. I’m not sure if I can recall which specific movie, but I’ve definitely at least heard it from people quoting a James Bond movie.

So there we were with one, isolated event. According to the above philosophy, that’s just happenstance. No problem. Move on. Maybe it won’t happen again.

After all, sometimes it’s just a freak occurrence? A fluke?

Hang on, why do we call it a fluke?

Fluke: (noun) an unlikely, chance occurrence

Also…

Fluke:(noun) one of the most common, accessible flatfish for recreational anglers in the Northeastern U.S. In other words, a very common fish.

I just discovered, by the way, that a single word with two contradictory, opposite meanings is sometimes called a “Janus Word”—named for the ancient Roman god with two faces. I think “fluke” should qualify. And among all the fun facts you’ll learn today, that might be the most interesting.

But I digress. Really, anything to keep my mind off the next event.

Yesterday, more water rained from the ceiling.

Mind you, we’re not talking about a lot of water. Just a few drops. But water has to come from somewhere, right? It doesn’t just manifest itself. Right?

At this point, with two events, it only qualifies as coincidence. Still, I can’t help but wonder if we’ve offended some random water spirit somewhere.

Don’t worry, I’ve taken the usual physical precautions that are healthily grounded in reality. I re-caulked the floor around the tub. I’m not completely insane. I don’t really think there’s an angry water spirit haunting our upstairs bathroom.

At least, I don’t think that yet.

But three times? That will be enemy action. And if that happens… well, I’m prepared to get witchy AF in there. I’m ready for some banishings.

Make sure to tune in next week… where hopefully I’ll have nothing else to report about this issue because I’m sure it’s fixed.

Are you superstitious?

Good morning and happy Monday, friends!

If you’re reading from a country that observes Daylight Savings Time, how is it treating you? I’ll say it’s hitting rather unpleasantly over here.

Saturday was our 5 year wedding anniversary. Yay for us! It was a pretty packed weekend, but we celebrated by going out to dinner. And we planned a short little trip for this upcoming weekend so that we can celebrate more.

Here we are with happy faces.

Just so there’s no confusion here, we’ve been counting our anniversary years from our public ceremony date, not from our secret courthouse eloping or our handfasting.

And because Selene really loves Trader Joe’s, I made sure to wrap her gift in appropriate packaging.

It even has functional handles!

I gave a presentation for Botanica Obscura on Sunday about music and plants. Suffered a few technical difficulties. I’d blame mercury retrograde, but they were probably just my fault. My external microphone convinced itself that it was actually a speaker. Delusions of grandeur? Maybe.

This week is spring break. Woo! Seems like a really good time to finish my book, yes? Yes. I think so.

Also, I should have a new episode of M3 out for you soon. I mean, if I’m not spending an extra 40-50 hours on classwork, just imagine all the things I can get done.

I’ve been finding it difficult to unwind recently, so Selene and I have gone for a bit of nostalgia. Pokemon!

Did you know there’s a gameboy emulator that runs on iPhone? And it’s free.

I’m stuck at a steel-type gym. Don’t worry, I will eventually persevere once I train this growlithe.

That’s all for now, friends. I’m off to dive back into my book. Stay tuned for more soon!
