At a festival last year, my wife and I showed up a few minutes late for one of the group rituals. We walked into a room full of people singing, found some free seats, and tried to follow along. I had never heard the song before, but I knew it was one I didn’t want to forget. When it was over, I wrote down the lyrics as best I could remember. Unfortunately the melody faded pretty quickly from my memory. (Clearly, I would have never made it as an 11th-century monk!)
Despite a few days of searching, there didn’t seem to be an audio file of the song anywhere — nothing on YouTube or Spotify. I actually had a friend send me a voice memo of his a cappella rendition of the tune, but it just wasn’t enough… I felt like I needed to find an original.
Eventually I did find it, thanks to a news article from the Windy City Times. The article pays tribute to Paula Walowitz, the song’s writer, who died in 2018. She was in a band called Surrender Dorothy. Their last concert was played at a coffee shop in 1984, and luckily someone filmed it. About 14 minutes into the video, She’s Been Waiting begins.
Title: She’s Been Waiting
Lyrics by: Paula WalowitzShe’s been waiting, waiting
She’s been waiting so long
She’s been waiting for her children
To remember, to return.Blessed be and blessed are the lovers of the Lady.
Blessed be and blessed are the Maidens, Mothers, Crones.
Blessed be and blessed are the ones who dance together.
Blessed be and blessed are the ones who dance alone.Blessed be and blessed are the ones who work in silence.
Blessed be and blessed are the ones who shout and scream.
Blessed be and blessed are the movers and the shakers.
Blessed be and blessed are the dreamers and the dream.
I obviously didn’t write the song, but I’m sharing because it’s so very hard to find good pagan chants to use for rituals.
What is remembered lives!
Update: I like the song so much, I decided to record my own version of it. Enjoy!
