If you don’t believe that cats understand everything, or at least a good bit of everything, then I’d say it’s highly likely that you don’t live with cats. Regardless, I’ll try to explain what I’ve noticed.

For starters, I’ve always found it rather interesting how they intuitively understand how to identify objects that we show a significant amount of attention to by napping on them. Laptops? Great napping places. The book I’m currently reading? Great napping place! My clothes? You guessed it — great places to nap.

But we don’t mind where they nap. After all, what’s ours is theirs, right?

Your food? My food? Our food.

Next, they most certainly understand when they’ve made a mess or when they’ve done something that will upset us. Some mornings I come downstairs and Loki is extra affectionate… a few minutes later I’ll discover what’s been knocked off shelves or counters. I think it’s his way of saying “sorry, human!”

I’m also quite positive they understand the things we say. I have full conversations with our cats. Usually they just don’t care enough to formulate a proper response — but that doesn’t mean they don’t understand.

On a more caring note, cats also understand when something is wrong with us. I’m not sure if it’s their ability to pick up on thought patterns or energy in general, but I’ve noticed they become extremely attentive when I’m feeling sick or even if I’m sad. Cats have powerful healing skills and sometimes we’re lucky enough to be blessed by them.

Now… maybe you’ll choose to give mundane, scientific explanations for everything I’ve described so far… but there is one final thing that I’ve never been able to figure out. Freya has always known when we’re leaving. She has a little hiding place behind our bed that she only utilizes if we have new people in the house or if we’re packing for a trip. We always find her back there whenever we’re getting ready to leave for vacation. For the longest time, I thought perhaps she had developed an association between our departure and the presence of suitcases, but she even runs to her hiding spot when our trip doesn’t require luggage! Does she hear us talking? Does our scent somehow change? Whatever her trick is, she’s been able to predict our trips with 100% accuracy over the years.

So to answer the question, there’s no single thing I wish I could make our pets understand — because they’ve already got it all figured out. It’s their world and we just live in it.

If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

Good morning and happy Monday, friends.

This week I’ll be interviewing Thorn Mooney and working on my setlist for Turning the Tide 2024.

I’m starting to offer rune readings. If you’re interested in that, you can look at the new services page I just created… but if you’re clever and look around on social media, you mind just find some free ways to obtain one as well.

I made a couple of short videos. One is on wax sealing envelopes and the other is another highlight clip from my Q&A episode.

Coby Michael just did his virtual “Flight School” class on flying ointments and we attended. It was excellent — full of historical, medicinal, and magickal information. If he does it again, which I’m sure he will, I’d highly recommend it.

I always have to sit around for a good while and think, “what did I actually do this week?” Sometimes it’s hard to separate the mundane day-to-day and sort it into actual “accomplishments.” Does anyone else feel like that? I certainly had ideas, but how many of those ideas made it into the real world… or at least become a step or two closer toward materialization?

I did finish the second part of my guide to wiccan prison ministry, which means that particular mini-series is concluded for now. I’ve also been wrapping up Part 3 of the fluid condenser series (okay, honestly, it’s 99% done now) and combining all the posts into one big thing — more will be revealed on that later… like, much later… after I’ve finished Part 4.

Selene and I went thrifting. We picked up a pretty big mirror that will soon be turned into a magickal tool — something we’ve been meaning to do for a couple years now and are finally getting around to.

On an entirely unrelated, nerdy, and personal note, I have finally started watching Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. So far, I’m loving it. It’s definitely giving my classic Trek vibes. I mean, come on… Spock switching bodies with T’Pring is just like when freak transporter accidents turn TNG’s bridge crew into children or combine Tuvok and Neelix into Tuvix. Didn’t we all love those episodes? Didn’t we? It’s new and nostalgic at the same time. End of nerdout.

We also finally got rid of Christmas. It’s been an ongoing project for the past couple of weeks, but all the lights are packed and 1000 pine needles has been swept up.

And my YouTube channel has finally broken 150 subscribers. Yay.

  1. Just so you know, there’s a documentary called “Inside the Mind of a Cat” on Netflix that shows how yes, cat’s understand more than we give them credit for – the difference between them and dogs is primarily that cats care much much less. 🤣

    1. Ahh you know what? I’ve seen that trending a few times, but haven’t watched it yet. Maybe I will now!

    1. Loki was quite a rambunctious trickster when we adopted him as a kitty… so the name fit. We thought maybe he’d grow out of it… but nope.
