I read this book one time called Tiny Buddha’s 365 Tiny Love Challenges. From what I recall, it was broken up into a lesson and exercise format. You’d read a chapter and then there would be “challenges” at the end to put into practice for daily life. I did my best to do one each day.

The only one I remember was to try to show love for your fellow human by carrying something around with you each day that was specifically for other people to use. The recommended token was a pen — but if you already carry a pen, it had to be a different pen.

I had just quit smoking at the time, but was hanging out with a lot of people who smoked. People were always looking for lighters, so I decided to make that my token. I picked out a cool-looking Zippo. It had a tiger on it. And I carried it around with me for a month.

Until I eventually lost the Zippo. I’m not sure what I really got out of the exercise, but I did light a lot of cigarettes.

So there’s that.

Of course, the real answer to this question is knowledge. You know, that thing that bridges the gap between wisdom and understanding.

I might accidentally leave the house without my wallet sometimes. Dare I say it, without my cell phone or keys. But I know what to do to fix the situation.

If I leave my house without knowledge, however… well, then I’m just really screwed. I probably wouldn’t make it back.

What do you always carry with you?

  1. It’s rare that I don’t have my fylgja with me. I might forget to bring everything else, but they follow me even into the most unexpected of places.

      1. Alas, only one most days for me.

But I do get the occasional hitchhikers or stowaways. 🙂
