What do you do when you’ve got marinated chicken and burgers prepped and ready for the grill, and then it starts to rain right as you’re about to light the coals?

You grill anyway, obviously.

But grilling in the rain sucks. I think the ideal home should have some sort of retractable canopy just for this type of situation. When ill weather approaches, you can just hit a button and get some protection.

I spent a couple hours cooking chicken, sausage, and burgers. It rained pretty much the whole time. Even though I pulled the grill up as close as possible to the side of the house, everything still got a bit wet.

It’s okay, I guess… the food was still pretty tasty.

Here’s some burgers for ya

And the ideal house should also have some sort of quirky welcome mat. Here’s one we picked up earlier this week…

Get it?

We were more than overdue for a welcome mat change because neighborhood cats have been using ours as a scratching post. Can’t really blame them… if I had claws, I’d probably do the same thing.

Oh, and while we’re on the topic, the ideal house also has a music studio, a ritual room, and probably some sort of workshop.

One day.

What does your ideal home look like?

Good Morning and happy Monday, friends! And happy Labor Day! I hope you’re all enjoying the finest of three day weekends celebrating the dignity of the American workforce.

It feels like not so much has happened this past week, but at the same time, it’s also been a complete blur from everything going on.

RIP “Sunflower Tzu”

Selene and I have spent a lot of time in the garden these past couple of weeks. And by “garden,” what I really mean is pots on our little back patio, but that’s okay because we make the best of the space!

We’re growing sunflowers. I was making pretty good progress with one — actually, I was taking a short video of it every day so I could go back and watch it transform from seedling to flower.

I had just gotten to the point where I had named him…

“Sunflower Tzu” seemed like an appropriate name, as he was the only seed to have sprouted from the entire packet. He was clearly well-versed in the art of war.

Unfortunately… A few days ago, I was feeding a squirrel… and then she jumped into my pot and bit the leaves off my seedling in one fell swoop. That was two weeks of work and attention! I guess sunflower sprouts must be pretty tasty. I don’t blame the squirrel. I blame myself.

Speaking of tasty, we went out to one of my favorite Indian restaurants.

It’s become a tradition to celebrate my recovery anniversary this way. I’ve got eight years now. That’s a long time. I imagine I’ll probably stop counting or lose track somewhere around the decade mark.

I have the article for Opal Luna’s interview finished and scheduled for posting later this week and I’m preparing for an interview with Laura Perry soon.

Among other things, I also did some serious investigation into the lyrics of a song known as “The Witches’ Reel.” If you’re into history, you’ll probably enjoy the lengthy article.

Oh, and KYPHI UPDATE. I was walking by the terra cotta pot where everything is curing and I noticed the lid had come off. I mean, the lid is just a piece of cardboard that I set on top, so it was probably just me bumping it at some point, but I took it as a sign that it was almost ready. I did a test burn and it smelled lovely, so expect more on that soon.

I think that’s all to report for now. Stay tuned for more updates and more articles!

The idea of recording the sunflower’s growth seems really awesome!

    1. Thanks! I’m starting over again. I mean, I made a silly short video to show my failed attempt, but this time I’ll try to do it every day to watch the progress and hopefully get to the flowering stage!
