Okay, I don’t usually pick favorites, but this is what came to mind first when I thought about my top albums.
Absolution was the first Muse album that I ever obtained. Actually, it was one of my first albums from any band, period.
You may or may not know this about me, but I was not allowed to listen to secular music as a kid. Having CDs was not an option. My dad once found a Christian rock CD in my room and just about had a fit over it.
When the days of Napster, Kazaa, and Limewire finally came around, I discovered that I could hide music on my computer. My own little underground smuggling operation. Digital contraband.
The only problem was… I had no frickin idea what to search for. My wife jokes with me sometimes because I was so sheltered, I basically missed out on an entire era of music.
For some unknown reason, my oldest sister mentioned the band Muse to me one day. I knew nothing about them, but thought it was a cool name, so I decided to search for them on filesharing platforms. Absolution was the first thing that came up in the results, so I grabbed a copy.
Holy shit. I was hooked. Every song was just exactly what I wanted to be. I’m pretty sure it completely radicalized my entire perception of music.
In current times, I probably listen to The 2nd Law most often. After all, it has my favorite song — Madness. Of course, I don’t do favorites, right?
But yeah. Absolution kicked it all off.
