When I was a kid, I had a skewed perception of cats. My mom was always scared of them. I’m not sure exactly why. She used to tell me that they were very scratchy and bitey animals, so I never wanted to be near them.

In my adulthood, however, I’ve developed a strong love and affection for all things feline. I’m sure you know by now, mostly because I frequently post pictures and talk about it, but Selene and I have two beautiful cats.

It’s rare to get a good picture of them together, but it does happen.

I’m here to remind you that that are several benefits to cat ownership.

First, the simple science: Owning a cat can reduce the risk or cardiovascular disease and increase heart health, while at the same time improving mental health by reducing stress and feelings of loneliness.

Modern medicine frequently ignores the best treatments…

But let’s not forget the non-scientific benefits as well.

They’re a better alarm clock.

Loki has paid close attention over the years and now knows precisely when I need to wake up in the morning. With an unfailing accuracy of +/- 2 minutes, he will jump up into bed and headbutt me in the face.

Learn new ways to get comfortable.

I’ve never seen any creature so comfortable as Freya every day. It doesn’t matter where she is, but she’ll find the best spot and the best position. I still have a lot to learn, but I’m trying.

Your trash will find new purpose.

Are you about to throw that away? No, silly human — that’s a toy. We have to play with it first. Reduce, reuse, recycle.

Extra cuddles.

Some cats are born cuddly. Others develop it over time. But damn, they are basically like stuffed animals for adults.

Unlimited cuteness and entertainment.

There’s never a dull moment because cats are almost always doing something entertaining. Whether that’s chasing their own tail, running after a flicker of light, or getting the zoomies and running in circles around the room, it’s always fun to watch.

And if you’re ever feeling depressed, go find a box of kittens.

What is good about having a pet?

Good morning and happy Monday, friends. And Happy November!

I’m finalizing Laura Perry’s interview. I should have it posted later this week actually, so that’s definitely something to look forward to. Next month, it’ll be Lon Milo DuQuette.

I wrote a post about Dumb Suppers. Give it a read if you have an interest in dining with your dead!

For the past few weeks, we keep finding all of these holes dug in our flower pots. And until a few days ago, I’ve just been blaming the squirrels. But then I caught one of the culprits red-handed!

That is a big frog. And he is very much burrowed into my pot.

Just to be fair, though, the squirrels are responsible for a lot of the other holes I’ve found. They love to dig.

We decided to do some pumpkin carving with the kids. Last Sunday, Walmart and Target had massive displays of pumpkins at the front of the stores. Unfortunately, I went to pick them a day later… and all of the regular pumpkins had vanished. But I did find a giant box of this very interesting variety labeled as “Candy Corn Pumpkins.”

Despite the fact that they look really nifty, they are terrible carving pumpkins. The walls are much thicker. All of the typical “pumpkin carving tools” didn’t stand a chance… and we actually ruined a couple of our kitchen knives.

I had a very elaborate design planned, but I ruined the back of my pumpkin… so I guess I’ll save it for next year. Luckily, I had a backup plan…

Behold, the puking zombie pumpkin. Selene had the idea to color the pumpkin guts green… or it would have just been a regular old puking pumpkin. It looked pretty cool lit up.

The squirrels really enjoyed it, too. I found them happily munching on all of the pumpkin innards several times.

On Thursday, we went trick or treating. I dressed up as a hippie, although I was told I didn’t really “need a costume for that.”

Lots of our friends were at FPG this past weekend. We are sorry to have missed it and hope everyone had a great time!

On Saturday, we went to the Dia de los Muertos celebration in Lake Worth. Saw some very cool skulls and a room full of altars. There was also music, food, and a short parade.

I’m going to be starting a StaarCon spotlight series soon. Get ready to meet some of the headliners and presenters! And if you haven’t already gotten your tickets, go grab them!

Oh yeah, I’m also very sorry to report that we finally saw Joker 2… and it sucked. Incredibly disappointed there. Had very high expectations.

That’s all for now! Stay tuned for more soon.
